Matthew August Schmidt, aged 44, of St. Paul, Arkansas left this world on Wednesday, April 10th, 2024. Matt was born on July 26th, 1979, to Gus and Carol Schmidt in Lawrence, KS. After Matt graduated from Lawrence High School in 1997, he excelled as a football player for Fort Scott Community College.
Matt honed his skills in mathematics, building, and many forms of creative woodwork throughout the years to come. Construction sites all over Kansas, Idaho, and Arkansas featured Matt on the job laying foundations, rounding curbs, and running complicated calculations in his head. A particular talent once noted by his father was an artistic hand dying concrete floors and countertops. During some years living in the mountainous West, Matt cultivated horseback riding and equine care into his varied repertoire of talents where he developed a love for pearl snap shirts and silk scarves.
Talented is a word that suits Matt Schmidt. Everyone familiar with him can agree that his charisma, humor, and downright luck were large parts of his character. Matt was a man who could pull in an 80 lb. catfish on a 10 lb. line, claiming all you need to do is to “hold your mouth right.” He was a man who saved the life of his third child by thinking on his feet, wrapping Zeke in cellophane before using towels as warming layers to protect him while waiting on the ambulance after their homebirth went awry. Matt was a man who loved nature; fishing, camping, astronomy, hunting and gathering food from the woods. He never knew a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone.
Matt was preceded in death by his mother and father and leaves behind four children Matthew Schmidt, Silas Schmidt, Ezekiel Schmidt, and Jedidiah Schmidt as well as their mother Lacey Schmidt. Services will be held at Withrow Springs Pavilion on Friday, April 19th. Potluck supper at 5:30 PM with the service beginning at 6:30 PM
